The Bruther family reunion was held last Sunday, Aug 21, at the shelter house on the Bill and Lee Bruther farm, with a lavish pitch-in dinner enjoyed.
Gifts were later presented to the person traveling the greatest distance, Mrs. Thomas Bruther, Fort Myers, Fla., whose husband died this past April 22, the oldest one present, William J. Means, 86, Seymour, and the youngest, Chad Watson, three months, two days.

Final Resting Place of Lewis and Grace Bruther
Just a few miles south of Old Bethel Cemetery is Harrell Cemetery, the final resting place for Lewis Bruther and Grace (Miskell) Bruther. It is not known why, at this time, Lewis and Grace were not buried in Old Bethel Cemetery where so many other Bruthers were buried.

Cousins Tom Smythe and John Shannon (2008)
Although they both live near Anchorage, Alaska neither knew of the other until John's research into the Bruther family led to the Smythes and Tom. Tom is the grandson of Elsie Bruther, daughter of Jesse F. and Lizzy Lowery, and William Smythe.

Old Bethel Cemetery
South of Hanover is a small cemetery that is the resting place for many of the Bruthers and Shannons. The Shannon family donated the land for the church and the cemetery.

Bethel Church (Presbyterian). George Shannon and Thomas Shannon deeded a lot to the trustees of this church on June 14, 1837. (Jefferson County Deed Book N p. 420) The members are described as Associate Reformed Presbyterian. The land was in Section 24 Twp. 3N Range 9E. Trustees named in the deed are James Patterson, William A. Wallace, and John Swan. The deed says the land conveys a lot of ground “including the meeting house and graveyard.” Among those mentioned, George and Thomas Shannon, and James Patterson are buried in the cemetery.

Wakefield - Willard Totten Wakefield, born in 1903, married Loretta Elizabeth Bruther in 1922. Loretta was born in 1905 and is the granddaughter of Caleb and Emily Bruther and the daughter of Jesse F. Bruther and Elizabeth Lowry. Shannon - Like the Bruthers, the Shannon family were a prominent family in the area just south of Hanover. The Bruthers and Shannons were united with the marriage of Della May Bruther and Nathan Curtis Shannon. Della May was the daugher of Lewis Bruther, brother of Jesse F. and son of Caleb and Emily Bruther, and Grace Miskell. John Shannon is researching this family.
